Cervical Cancer Series | HPV & Cervical Cancer

Join us for the second session of LPCA’s Cervical Cancer Prevention Learning Series. This session will build foundational knowledge about HPV and its critical role in cervical cancer development.

Participants will gain a clear understanding of HPV virology, the differences between high-risk and low-risk HPV types, and evidence-based strategies for HPV vaccination, including schedules, recommended age groups, and approaches to improve uptake.

Topics to be covered include:

  • HPV virology and its progression to cervical cancer
  • High-risk vs. low-risk HPV types
  • HPV vaccine: schedules, age groups, and uptake strategies
  • Myths and misconceptions about HPV
  • Effective communication of HPV risks and prevention strategies to patients

By the end of this session, participants will have the knowledge and tools to confidently educate patients about HPV, address common misconceptions, and implement strategies to improve vaccination rates in their communities.
This webinar will provide an overview of HPV virology and its progression to cervical cancer. Dr. Jernigan will discuss the difference between high-risk and low-risk HPV types and provide information on the HPV vaccine including uptake strategies.

Dr. Amelia Jernigan is the Division Director of Gynecologic Oncology and an Associate Professor with the LSU Health Sciences Center Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She completed her medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. She then completed her Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD, where she served as Administrative Chief Resident. This was followed by a fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH.

She joined LSU in 2016 and serves as the Medical Director of Cancer Services at University Medical Center New Orleans and the Interim Cancer Service Line lead for LCMC Health. As a board certified Gynecologic Oncologist she specializes in the comprehensive care of gynecologic conditions. She has expertise in comprehensive gynecologic cancer care and offers minimally invasive and radical surgical therapies and offers systemic anticancer treatments including chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapy.

She feels that no Louisiana woman should have to leave home to receive innovative, cutting-edge care. She built Louisiana’s first and most robust gynecologic oncology hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) program. She is an active member and has served in leadership roles for the Society of Gynecologic Oncology, the National Research Group, and the NCI Gynecologic Cancer Steering Committee. She has published and presented dozens of scientific abstracts and articles over the past several years. Her team offers a wide array of exciting clinical trials and is a leading enrollment site on several national cooperative group trials.

She is motivated by the bravery of the women she cares for and her partners’ and team-mates’ unwavering commitment to excellence in care. She loves live music and seafood. Her greatest loves are her husband Jeff, son Robbie and two dogs, Edgar Allen Po’Boy and Jodie Bananas Foster.
